The Therapeutic Value of Gardening and Getting Hands Dirty
Sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed by some silly little thing, I go out to the garden and I take a look around at jobs that need to be done. We're into the "no dig" method so we don't get too many weeds. Still and all, you must keep on top of the weeds and get them when they're small and have not got established yet. Don't get me wrong! I'm not adverse to weeds. They just aren't allowed where the vegetables are growing. I have other areas that are considered to be full of pure weeds. I see them as beautiful flowers and plants..... So back to me pottering in the garden trying to get my head in order!! I look for jobs and I set to. These jobs include weeding, as already stated, planting out or sowing and harvesting. Harvesting is my favourite job. Here you get to bring into your kitchen all the vegetables that you have looked after and nurtured for a couple of months. We have so many vegetables that we can also offer some to neighbours and friends. It's a wonderful feeling to share!! Of course the best part is the eating of these vegetables, fresh from the garden. But my real point here is that getting you hands dirty and clean your mind and lift your spirits.
Wouldn't you think I would wear gloves and keep those hands from getting dirty. NO!!
The Scientific Explanation About How Soap Works
Why should I bother wearing gloves when I know I have my own natural handmade soap (handmade by my very own hands!!) to get my hands back as clean as ever. What is the chemistry behind a bar of soap? How does soap work? Water alone doesn't wet very well. Blended with soap, it doesn't form tight droplets but rather soaks in. The soap has acted as a surfactant. Soap molecules have heads which attract water and tails which repel it. So when mixed with water these molecules push their hydrophobic tails up through the surface of the water, to escape. So now you have all these tails poking through the top layer breaking the surface tension of the water and cause it to spread out and wet more thoroughly.
Soap removes dirt and oil and grease in two stages. First it attaches itself to the dirt, and then it suspends the dirt in lather until a rinse carries them both away.
To be precise, the soap molecule cleans by embedding its tail into the dirt and dislodging it as its head pulls toward the water. The soap then holds the dirt in suspension until it is rinsed away.

I'm not one for the long nails. I don't paint them either and I don't really give them too much attention. What I do do is keep them short and when washing my hands I use a nail brush to make sure the there's no remaining garden dirt under my nails.
But just one final word. Don't be overly worried about dirt. Getting your hands a little dirty now and again keeps you immune system perked up and working. It's just like they say for young babies. Let them get their hands dirty. Don't over clean the house. Let the baby crawl on the floor. Now I don't think you'll be crawling around in the muck but bet out there into you garden with or without gloves!
