Expressions To Do with Hair
Expressions To Do with Hair
We've all heard of the expression of having a "BAD HAIR DAY". This can mean that literally your hair is all over the place today but it can also mean that nothing is going right for you. Ever had one of those types of days?? Here are a few other expressions that use the word "hair" in them;-
KEEP YOUR HAIR ON
Have you ever been asked to keep your hair on? Of course that meant to take it easy and to calm down, right? It used to be keep your shirt on and that originated from the fact that when you got into a fight, you'd have to take the shirt off to protect it so keeping the shirt on meant that you weren't going to get into that fight.
LET THE HAIR DOWN
This means to go all out and forget about any inhibitions or restraint. Long ago or not so long ago when women had to tie their hair up except when they were alone, the letting down of the hair meant normally that they were alone, about to go to bed or have a bath. Totally relaxed!!!
TEAR YOUR HAIR OUT
If you're tearing your hair out, you're not in a good place. It signifies extreme worry or frustration
HAIR OF THE DOGWhen you have a hangover and you try to lessen the symptoms by drinking the same as the night before. Sound like a good idea? I think not!!!
GET IN SOMEONE'S HAIR
This means that your an annoying old fart and you're really annoying someone!!
MAKE YOUR HAIR STAND ON END
If something or someone does this to you they're pretty scary
SPLIT HAIRS
This means going into too much detail and not being able to come to a conclusion. And if I don't go now I will be splitting hairs with expressions of hair so I'll go off to tear my hair out with a job I have to do and I hope my hair won't be standing on end this evening when I watch some scary film on TV. One thing I won't be doing today is letting the hair down as I'm far too busy for that. And I won't be having hair of the dog tomorrow as I don't intend to have a drink this evening. But you never know!! I could be letting the hair down this evening with a bottle of wine in front of me as I watch a hair raising scary film!!!
