Cold Cream

Who remembers the product, cold cream? It reminds me of days gone by.  It is a vintage product in my mind.  You don't see it around much anymore.  Anyway, what is cold cream?  Cold cream is an emulsion of both water, fats and beeswax.  Later, to make it more stable, borax was added as this helps to saponify the fats.

It has been used in the past to remove make-up or simply to moisturise.  The fats used would help moisturise, the beeswax would help protect the skin and the water would make it all very light and absorbable.

In a way, my own night face cream mimics it a little.  Except for the water content that I don't have in my face cream  and some  extra oils such as avocado oil, vitamin e oil, rosehip oil, evening primrose oil, apricot kernel oil that I have included and that are not to be found in cold cream, my face cream is quite similar

But anyway for those who want to follow a recipe for cold cream I have added below one

Recipe for Cold Cream

  • ½ cup sweet almond oil
  • 5 tblsp. water
  • 2 tblsp.  beeswax Melted
  • ¼ Borax
  • a few drops of you favourite essential oil

Method

  • Melt the wax,
  • Put all ingredients together except essential oil and borax
  • Using a stick blender mix for 5 to 20 minutes to get a full emulsion
  • Then add the borax and the essential oil
  • Put into a suitable cream container and use within 2/3 weeks.  For anything longer you would have to use preservatives and I'm afraid I don't dabble with preservatives in my natural skincare and therefore it's beyond me to recommend one.
